PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA
Philadelphia is where America declared independence, where the Constitution was written, where Rocky ran up those steps, and where people take cheesesteaks VERY seriously. This is a blue-collar city with world-class museums, a passionate sports culture (Eagles fans are legendary), and neighborhoods that feel like small towns. Philly has an edge—it’s grittier than Boston, more authentic than DC, and cheaper than NYC. The history is everywhere, the food is incredible, and locals will tell you exactly what they think (politely or not).
In June/July, weather is hot and humid. 80-90°F with occasional thunderstorms. Not as brutal as the South but sticky. Summers are sweaty.
Fan-Friendly Spots
Old City is the historic district with cobblestone streets, colonial buildings, and bars in old warehouses. It’s walkable and packed with history and nightlife.
Fishtown is the hipster neighborhood with breweries, dive bars, and live music. Younger crowd, authentic Philly vibe.
South Street has bars, restaurants, tattoo shops, and eclectic energy. “South Street, where do you go?” (locals will get the reference).
What to Actually Do
Independence Hall and Liberty Bell are essential American history. Independence Hall requires timed tickets (FREE but book ahead online). Give it 2-3 hours for both.
Reading Terminal Market is Philly’s food hall—Amish vendors, cheesesteaks, Pennsylvania Dutch pretzels, everything. Open since 1893. Perfect for lunch.
Philadelphia Museum of Art is world-class (Impressionists, Van Gogh, Picasso). But most people just run up the “Rocky Steps” outside and take photos. Do both.
For groups: Rent bikes and ride along the Schuylkill River Trail, or explore the Italian Market (9th Street, South Philly).
Where Fans Eat & Drink
Philly takes food seriously. Cheesesteaks, roast pork, hoagies, soft pretzels—all essential.
Must-Try:
- Cheesesteak: Pat’s vs Geno’s is the tourist trap. Locals go to Jim’s, John’s Roast Pork, or Dalessandro’s. Order “wit” (with onions) or “without”
- Roast pork sandwich: DiNic’s at Reading Terminal (voted best sandwich in America)
- Soft pretzels: Street vendors everywhere, $1-2, eat with mustard
- Hoagie: Philly-style sub sandwich, get one at Wawa (local convenience store chain)
- Water ice: Italian ice, Rita’s or John’s Water Ice
Drinks: Yuengling (oldest American brewery, from PA), Yards Brewing, or craft cocktails in Old City.
For watching other matches: Fado Irish Pub, Field House (sports bar), or Misconduct Tavern.
Where NOT to Go: Penn’s Landing is underwhelming. The Betsy Ross House is overhyped. Skip the tourist cheesesteak war (Pat’s vs Geno’s)—both are mediocre.
Getting Around Philly
SEPTA (Subway/Bus): Broad Street Line (north-south orange line) and Market-Frankford Line (east-west blue line) cover the city well. $2.50/ride, $13 day pass.
Trains run 5am-midnight weekdays, 24 hours on weekends. Center City is very walkable. Old City, Rittenhouse Square, South Street all connect easily on foot.
Uber/Lyft is $8-18 for most trips. Traffic is manageable compared to NYC.
Indego Bikes: Bike share system, $4/30 min. Good for exploring.
From Airport: Philly Airport (PHL) is 7 miles south. SEPTA Airport Line to Center City ($6.75, 25 min) or Uber ($20-35, 20 min).
Safety
Philadelphia is generally safe. Center City, Old City, Rittenhouse, University City are all safe and well-policed. After dark, downtown and Old City stay lively. Fishtown and Northern Liberties are safe but quieter. Avoid North Philly, it has high crime—tourists rarely end up there, but don’t wander.
Insider Knowledge
Sports Fanatics: Philly fans are PASSIONATE. They boo their own teams when they underperform. They once threw batteries at opposing players. Don’t mess with them.
“Jawn” is Philly slang for anything. “Pass me that jawn” could mean passing the remote, the ball, the sandwich—anything.
SEPTA is Pronounced “SEP-tuh.” The subway/bus system. The Rocky Statue is at the bottom of the Art Museum steps (not the top). Take your photo, then run up the steps. Tipping is 18-20% at restaurants. Sales Tax is 8% (not included in prices).
