Monterrey is Mexico’s business hub—mountains surround the city, corporations fill the skyline, and money flows. This is the wealthiest city in Mexico, more modern and progressive than most. Think Houston but with Mexican culture and stunning Nuevo León mountain backdrops. The people are proud, direct, and work-focused. The food is MEAT (carne asada capital), the beer is excellent (Tecate, Carta Blanca born here), and the stadium has some of the best views in football.
June Weather: HOT and DRY. 85-100°F with low humidity. Desert climate. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and water.
Fan-Friendly Spots
Barrio Antiguo (Old Quarter) is the historic district with bars, clubs, and restaurants in colonial buildings. It’s walkable and lively on weekends.
Parque Fundidora is a massive park with museums, a lake, breweries, and wide-open spaces. Perfect for afternoon beers before evening matches elsewhere.
Paseo Santa Lucía is a beautiful riverwalk with restaurants and boat rides. Nice for sunset strolls.
What to Actually Do
Grutas de García caves (25 miles west) involve a cable car ride up a mountain, then exploring massive caverns. Give it half a day.
Museo del Acero Horno 3 (Steel Furnace Museum) shows Monterrey’s industrial history in a converted blast furnace. Unique and interesting.
For adventurous groups: Hiking in Parque Nacional Cumbres de Monterrey—stunning mountains right outside the city.
Macroplaza is one of the world’s largest public squares—good for people-watching and photos of the mountains.

Getting Around Monterrey
Uber is the cheapest option. $2-8 for most trips within the city.
Metro: 2 lines, clean and modern, but limited coverage. 5 pesos ($0.30) per ride.
Driving: Easy to rent a car and navigate. Parking is usually free or cheap.
From Airport: Monterrey Airport (MTY) is 14 miles northeast. Uber $10-15 (25 min).
Safety
Monterrey is safe in tourist areas. It’s wealthier and more orderly than other Mexican cities.
Watch Out For:
- Some suburbs have cartel activity—stick to tourist zones
- Don’t drive at night in unfamiliar areas
- Use Uber instead of street taxis
After Dark: Barrio Antiguo, San Pedro, Fundidora are safe and lively.

Monterrey has two teams—Rayados (BBVA) and Tigres (Universitario). The Clásico Regiomontano derby is massive. “Regio” is Someone from Monterrey. They’re known for being direct, business-focused, and proud. Locals love hiking and outdoor activities. The mountains are everywhere.
Cervecería Cuauhtémoc (brewery) offers tours and tastings. Worth visiting. Summer is brutal. Everything happens indoors with AC.
