SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA (SANTA CLARA), CALIFORNIA

San Francisco is iconic—Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, Alcatraz, sourdough bread bowls, and tech billionaires. But the World Cup stadium is actually in Santa Clara, 45 miles south in the heart of Silicon Valley. This is where Google, Apple, and Facebook are headquartered, where housing costs $1 million for a shack, and where innovation meets California chill. The weather is perfect, the food is incredible, and the region offers everything from beaches to redwood forests.
The weather in June is perfect. 60-75°F, sunny, low humidity. Mornings can be cool/foggy, but it burns off. Bring layers—it gets chilly when the sun goes down.

Fan-Friendly Spots

San Francisco’s North Beach (Little Italy) and Marina District have bars with outdoor seating perfect for watching matches. Kezar Pub near Golden Gate Park is a soccer bar that shows international matches.
In San Jose (10 miles from the stadium), San Pedro Square Market is a food hall with bars and outdoor space—great for pre-match gatherings. Santana Row in San Jose is an upscale outdoor shopping/dining area with restaurants and bars, perfect for groups.

What to Actually Do

Golden Gate Bridge—walk or bike across it (1.7 miles each way). Rent bikes at Fisherman’s Wharf, ride across the bridge to Sausalito, take the ferry back. Amazing experience.
Fisherman’s Wharf is touristy but fun—sea lions at Pier 39, sourdough bread bowls with clam chowder, street performers. Muir Woods (30 min north) has giant coastal redwood trees hundreds of years old. It’s stunning and peaceful. For groups: Wine country (Napa/Sonoma, 1 hour north) offers tastings, beautiful scenery, and Instagram-worthy vineyards.

Where Fans Eat & Drink

San Francisco food is world-class and expensive. But it’s worth it.

Must-Try:

Sourdough bread bowls: Boudin at Fisherman’s Wharf (touristy but classic)

Mission burritos: Super burritos the size of your head, $10-12 (La Taqueria, El Farolito)

Dungeness crab: In season, sweet and delicious

Chinese food: Chinatown has some of the best outside Asia (House of Nanking, R&G Lounge)

Seafood: Swan Oyster Depot (cash only, expect a wait)

Craft Beer: Bay Area has incredible breweries. Anchor Brewing (San Francisco), Lagunitas (Petaluma), and hundreds more.

For watching other matches: Kezar Pub (soccer bar), The Chieftain (Irish pub), or Mad Dog in the Fog (British pub).

Where NOT to Go

Pier 39 at night. Nothing happens there. The Tenderloin neighborhood is sketchy, and also high crime. Avoid leaving valuables in cars anywhere—smash-and-grabs are an epidemic.

Getting Around the Bay Area

BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) and Muni (buses/light rail) cover the city well. $2.50-5 per ride depending on distance. The city is walkable too—though hills are brutal. Uber/Lyft is essential for getting between cities. $15-40 within SF, $40-90 to South Bay. Rental Cars are also very useful for exploring wine country, coast, or South Bay. Parking in SF is $30-50/day and hard to find. Use public transit in the city, cars everywhere else.

Distances

SF to Santa Clara: 45 miles (60-90 min with traffic)

SF to San Jose: 50 miles (60-90 min)

SF to Napa Valley: 55 miles (90 min)

From Airports:

SFO (San Francisco): BART to downtown ($10, 30 min) or Uber ($30-50)

San Jose (SJC): Closer to the stadium! Uber $15-25 to Santa Clara, $50-70 to SF

Safety

Car break-ins are an absolute EPIDEMIC. Don’t leave ANYTHING visible in your car, not even loose change. Smash-and-grab happens in broad daylight. The homelessness situation is also very visible, especially in Tenderloin and parts of downtown. Most people are harmless but it can be overwhelming. Property crime is high. Keep your valuables secure.
Areas like Fisherman’s Wharf, North Beach, Marina, Haight-Ashbury, Union Square are mostly safe during the day.

Insider Knowledge

Locals have named the fog. It rolls in from the ocean, especially in summer. Mark Twain supposedly said, “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.” It’s true. Locals call it “The City” or “SF,” never “San Fran” or “Frisco.” You’ll get eye-rolls. SF has different weather in different neighborhoods simultaneously. Marina can be sunny while Mission is foggy. Everyone works in tech. Hoodies and sneakers are formal wear. Don’t be surprised by casual billionaires. SF takes coffee seriously. Blue Bottle, Sightglass, Ritual—all excellent. The local starter culture makes SF sourdough unique. It’s a thing. Cable Cars are touristy but fun once. $8 per ride, expect lines. Tipping is 20% standard, sometimes more, while sales Tax is 8.5-9.5% (not included in prices).
